چکیده

This paper mainly focuses on the two main classification of motion estimation algorithms used for video compression. Motion Estimation (ME) algorithms vary with respect to the a priori information and constraints they employ, as well as the method of computation they use to obtain the estimate. The classifications for ME algorithms are based on feature/region matching, gradient based methods, spatiotemporal energy methods, deterministic model based methods and stochastic model based methods. This paper focuses more on block matching algorithms which comes under feature/region matching and gradient based methods. This paper compares 2 important ME algorithms. They are Full Search (FS) or ES and a newly found adaptive algorithm called AMEA. These algorithms are used for implementing various standards, which ranges from MPEG1 / H.261 to MPEG4 / H.263 and H.264/AVC. A very brief introduction to the entire flow of video compression is also presented in this paper.

Comparative Study of Motion Estimation Techniques in Video

Block matching motion estimation is the essence of video coding systems. Therefore, development of an efficient method for fast motion estimation is the basic requirement of the video encoder design. Block based motion estimation algorithms are used to reduce the memory requirements of any video file and also decrease computational complexity. We have been presented here some block matching alg...

Two Level Block Matching Criterion for Motion Estimation Using Integral Frames Features

In block based motion estimation algorithms, computation is reduced by limiting the number of candidate search points within the search window or simplifying the distortion measurement criterion for block matching. Integral frame based block motion estimation algorithms have been suggested in literature which drastically reduce computation cost. However, these algorithms have a serious drawback...

New adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation

Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...

Efficient Block Matching Algorithms for Motion Estimation in H.264/avc

In Scalable Video Coding (SVC), motion estimation and inter-layer prediction play an important role in elimination of temporal and spatial redundancies between consecutive layers. This paper evaluates the performance of widely accepted block matching algorithms used in various video compression standards, with emphasis on the performance of the algorithms for a didactic scalable video codec. Ma...
